Description

Discover Destrehan Plantation, where history comes alive in captivating detail. This New Orleans plantation tour will introduce you not only to the individuals whose portraits adorn this historic home but also to many of the enslaved men and women who built and sustained the plantation. Come meet them. Hear their stories. Then, go home and share what you've learned.

Just 25 minutes from Downtown New Orleans, Destrehan is the closest plantation to the city and the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi Valley. It is a significant landmark of Andry's Rebellion, the 1811 German Coast uprising, which was the largest slave revolt in United States history.

Few southern plantations bring the past to life as vividly as Destrehan Plantation. Costumed interpreters guide visitors through the Big House, sharing stories of both free and enslaved people who lived there during yellow fever outbreaks and the Civil War.

Learn about plantation architecture, view unique historical documents, and see family treasures, including a registry of enslaved individuals and an actual slave cabin.

After the tour, explore self-guided exhibits, dependency buildings, and the grounds. The Miller-Haydel Museum, once an overseer's cabin, hosts the 1811 German Coast Uprising exhibit, detailing the slave revolt that led to the execution of 44 people, including three from Destrehan Plantation.

Downloadable audio tours are available on site in French, Spanish, German, and English with the purchase of a Life at Destrehan Plantation tour ticket.

My husband & I visited on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024. Clint was our tour guide. We were delighted with his extensive knowledge of the history. Our tour through the house took you back to the 18th & 19th century of the area and the times. It's a unique look at our past and the people. We would suggest a visit when in the area.
