"SOPHY Hyde Park, My New Favorite Chicago Hotel"

My three-day stay at SOPHY Hyde Park was blissful. I arrived on a Thursday, coinciding with Chicago's first snowfall of the season. Weary from the journey from Deerfield to Hyde Park, my fatigue quickly dissipated when I caught sight of the hotel—a beacon on 53rd Street. The friendly greeting from the doorman as I exited my Uber set the tone for a memorable trip. Upon entering the hotel, I was amazed by its clean, stylish appearance. The color palette is chic, and the furniture in reception is beautiful and inviting. Every detail, from the ceiling pattern to the knickknacks on shelves and the tile flooring, is thoughtfully designed, including the giant glass fireplace that separates the reception area from the Mesler Kitchen and Bar. Also of note is the art that covers every part of the hotel. You would be correct to refer to SOPHY Hyde Park as an art gallery or museum displaying the works of local artists, many of which are women or people of color. That mix offers a unique perspective of styles and disciplines. SOPHY Hyde Park should provide an art walk; their collection is that good. Check-in was a breeze. The reception staff were friendly and efficient and quickly sent me to my room. The hotel room was stunning, reflecting the same attention to design and detail in common areas. I had a fantastic view through a floor-to-ceiling window west along 53rd Street. There was ample closet space, stylish chairs, a bench, and a settee. The bathroom was exceptional—I love a good bathroom! There was a gorgeous painting on the wall. The shower was spacious, and the water pressure was perfect. There were plenty of towels and washcloths, extra pillows in the closet, and even a clothes steamer. They thought of everything a fashionista could want, including bathrobes! The bed was incredibly comfortable; I fell asleep the moment my head hit the pillow. An urban fee grants you access to boxed water, a record player, and the hotel's vinyl collection, but I spent very little time in my room. Instead, I enjoyed Mesler Kitchen's Gallery Night, watching a local artist paint and entertaining friends and family in the reception area. I spent hours sipping tea or enjoying drinks, surrounded by other guests and locals. SOPHY Hyde Park feels like a cultural hub where people come to relax and connect. The Mesler Kitchen is a cool spot for locals and guests to relax and unwind. I had Sunday brunch at Mesler Kitchen—the service was top-notch. The waiter and food runner were kind and paid close attention to my party. The food was delicious, especially the pancakes. I'd come back just for those! I've never spent so much time at a hotel bar! I dressed early to come downstairs and relax in the lounge. I would make tea in the morning and enjoy it in the lounge instead of rushing back to my room. At SOPHY Hyde Park and Mesler Kitchen, you nod and greet fellow guests, often conversing with those sitting nearby. You connect with the staff, who are welcoming. Everyone, from the doormen to the hostesses, waitstaff, and housekeeping, says hello. I particularly enjoyed chatting with the staff at The Mesler, especially Destiny, who seemed to be there every day. It became a running joke; every time I entered or left the hotel, there was Destiny! On my last day, I told her, "Destiny, I'm leaving. I'm sad to go." Without missing a beat, she replied, "We're going to miss seeing you around here." It made me feel special! Hyde Park has grown considerably over the years, and there is much to see and do in the neighborhood, contributing to a feeling of safety. SOPHY Hyde Park's strategic location offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of downtown Chicago and the Magnificent Mile while remaining within easy reach of popular attractions. Whether you're heading to the Loop or North Michigan Avenue, you'll find that SOPHY Hyde Park's location is incredibly convenient. The hotel's mix of service, style, and location make it a top choice for any traveler looking to see a real Chicago neighborhood. It joins The Langham, The Publishing House, and The Pendry as my favorite Chicago hotels.

When staying, Sam will treat you right……………… What a Chicago South Side treat with a strong art collection, excellent restaurant. and a neighborhood that is to one of the most vibrant and undertouristed areas. Easy distance from Midway Airport and an easy uber to the loop. A downtown upscale environment at a reasonable price.. We had a one day project to visit the Pullman Historic District and National Park and could not have been happier with the location, ambiance and hospitality of the SOPHY. We even got some great ideas for our KOA a campground which has 5 stars on TripAdvisor. So it takes extra ordinary service and attention to delight us. PS: Sam abides by the slogan of another upscale chain. “Ladies and Gentleman” serving “Ladies and Gentleman”.

The hotel was full of character and very welcoming with all of the artwork on display! I loved that the work of some of the students from local schools was also featured along with local artists and others. The blazing wall fireplace was beautiful and welcoming. The rooms were lovely, the restaurant was gorgeous and filled with art, and the food was amazing! It is now one of my favorite hotels!

This is by far one of the most adorable, comfy, picturesque hotels in the city. The staff is superb as well. They are extremely friendly and helpful. My room was perfect! Everything from cleanliness and decor to the views. The Mesler kitchen and cocktails doesn’t disappoint either. Can’t wait to return.

Returned to find a valet in my room. He had entered room without my permission. After he left, I realized personal property and cash had been stolen from my room. (No coded lockboxes in room.) Stay comped but no explanation yet from management why valet was in room in the first place, and if he wasn’t responsible for theft, who was? Disappointed and surprised this would happen at the Sophy. Won’t be staying there again.
