Lou & Mickey’s: Cocktails, Coconut Shrimp, and Gaslamp Glam

Because sometimes you don’t need a full meal—you just need a cocktail that smokes and shrimp that slaps.

Katherine: Let’s just grab a snack and a quick drink.

Kelsi: Cut to us an hour later, forever changed by coconut shrimp and a fruity gin cocktail.

When you’re wandering through the Gaslamp Quarter on a sunny afternoon, post-shopping and pre-chaos, sometimes the universe delivers exactly what you didn’t know you needed: a velvet-lined patio chair, a showstopper cocktail, and an appetizer that makes you consider ordering a second round just for yourself.

Enter: Lou & Mickey’s. Or, as we now refer to it—Lou & Mickey’s San Diego Chapter of Unplanned Bliss.

A Gaslamp Classic with Serious Star Power

Located at 224 Fifth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101, Lou & Mickey’s has earned its reputation as one of the cornerstones of the Gaslamp Quarter’s culinary scene. Directly across from the San Diego Convention Center, it’s often buzzing with suit jackets, Padres jerseys, and well-heeled wanderers like us in search of a good cocktail and better ambiance.

The restaurant is named after Lou and Mickey Russo, the father-son duo behind the legendary steakhouse legacy. Originally from the East Coast, they brought that old-school hospitality and show-stopping service west—and the vibe still leans timeless: a blend of vintage glamor, rich wood interiors, leather booths, and staff who actually look like they enjoy their jobs (and know the drink menu like they wrote it).

Outdoor Patio or Indoors? Yes.

We opted to sit outside because the San Diego weather was giving “patio main character energy”—light breeze, sun at a flattering angle, and people-watching gold. Our table had a direct view of the Gaslamp foot traffic, a live-action feed of every bachelorette party, baseball pregame crew, and convention badge in the wild.

But the inside? Still stunning. Think moody lighting, polished wood, and a bar that belongs in a noir film. It’s the kind of place where you could roll solo in heels and a red lip and feel like you’re in your own movie. And that’s without even opening the menu.

Snack Goals: Coconut Shrimp & Main Character Cocktails

We were technically in “snack mode,” which means the Crispy Coconut Wild Jumbo Shrimp ($19) from the appetizer section made its glorious debut. Five golden-brown shrimp, perfectly fried with a crunchy, slightly sweet coating, served with a dipping sauce that deserves its own fan club. It was giving luxury poolside energy—but like, if the pool had a sommelier.

Katherine ordered the Smoking Gun, a smoked Old Fashioned featuring Michter’s US1 rye, brown sugar, allspice, and whiskey barrel bitters. The whole thing arrived under a glass cloche, smoke swirling like it had just escaped a magician’s sleeve. Dramatic? Yes. Delicious? Even more so. Smooth, bold, and just smoky enough to make your taste buds do a double take.

Kelsi went bright and flirty with the White Linen—a gin-based cocktail made with Prairie organic gin, cucumber, lemon, and elderflower. It was crisp, citrusy, and dangerously drinkable. The kind of drink that convinces you to buy a floppy hat and book a spa day.

The Menu: Something for Everyone, Especially the Decadent

Even though we didn’t dive into the full spread (this time), the Lou and Mickey’s Restaurant menu deserves its flowers. The raw bar alone is enough to bring us back: oysters, chilled lobster tails, and shrimp towers that stroll past your table like edible celebrities. (We’re still dreaming about oysters from Water Grill and fully plan to compare next time.)

But it’s not just seafood. The Hand-Cut Prime Steaks are dry-aged in-house for 30+ days in a temperature-controlled room with a Himalayan salt wall. Fancy, yes—but the payoff is that melt-in-your-mouth, perfectly marbled, steakhouse-level bliss.

Other favorites on the menu:

  • Prime Ribeye (16 oz) – A classic with rich, buttery depth.
  • Barrel-Cut Filet Mignon (8 oz or 12 oz) – If you’re craving that steakhouse centerpiece moment.
  • Macadamia Nut Crusted Wild Alaskan Halibut – A West Coast seafood darling.
  • Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes – Golden on the outside, pillowy on the inside.

Vegetarians and pasta lovers aren’t left behind either, with options like the Grilled Chicken Penne Carbonara, Roasted Beets with Humboldt Fog Goat Cheese, and an Asparagus Gremolata side that’s got star power of its own.

The Cocktail & Wine Menu: Basically a Novel (A Delicious One)

Let’s talk about that cocktail list. Whether you’re team whiskey, tequila, gin, or vodka—Lou and Mickey’s Gaslamp delivers with options ranging from tropical (hello, Margarita Verde) to vintage-glam (Old Fashioned, Rum Swizzle). There’s even a “Temper Tantrum” made with aged rums, OJ, passionfruit, and pomegranate for anyone feeling a little… dramatic.

And the wine list? A literal novella of global reds, whites, and bubbles. Whether you want a Duckhorn Cab, a crisp Sancerre, or to splurge on Dom Pérignon, it’s got range.

The Service: Five Stars, No Notes

Our server was warm, welcoming, and absolutely on top of it. Glasses refilled before we asked, cocktail questions answered with genuine recommendations (not the upsell vibe), and we never once had to wave someone down. Bonus points for the bartender who nodded approvingly when Katherine ordered her smoked Old Fashioned. That’s a man who respects the classics.

Final Thoughts: Should You Go?

Katherine: 100%. Whether it’s dinner, drinks, or a “snack that spirals into a situation,” Lou & Mickey’s is the vibe.

Kelsi: I’d return just for the shrimp. And the cocktail. And the patio. Okay fine, all of it.

Lou & Mickey’s Hits Every Note

Location: 224 Fifth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101 – Right in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, across from the San Diego Convention Center.
