Holiday Inn and Suites Santa Maria, CA, is like finding a TARDIS on your road trip—it’s bigger on the inside! Seriously, these rooms are huge! You could host a yoga class, practice your cartwheels, or just marvel at all the space while laying on the massive comfy bed. As for the service, it’s truly out of this world—like they hired a team of superheroes undercover as hotel staff. They’re fast, friendly, and always there with a smile, ready to save your day (or just bring you extra towels, which is basically the same thing). If you want space and stellar service, this is the place to be!

I was here for a week and booked a 2 bdroom suite with a kitchen. The kitchen is not stocked, and I had to ask for kitchen "tub" that supposedly had all we would need. However, there were no real mugs; coffee tastes better and it is environmentally much better than using a paper cup multiple times per day. Also, there was no dish rag, so we used a washcloth. The restaurant is below average. They only have one waitress in the morning. From the time we sat until we received our food (a simple breakfast wrap and a bowl of granola), it took one hour. There are no vegan options. They only have whole milk. There is no oatmeal. I was sorely disappointed. The best thing about this hotel was the location. Right off the 101.

Just a disappointing stay. I wasn't expecting luxury but having stayed at a lot of Hilton Garden Inns and Hampton Suites, Hyatt Places and Hyatt Houses, and Marriott Fairfields and Residence Inns over the years I expected a similar experience. I was wrong. The hotel is dark and so very dates. The carpets are stained. There was the smell of cigarette smoke in several areas on our floor (3). There was a sad bar and kitchen area in the lobby that is not being used for anything that would make one's stay more than interesting or enjoyable. The check in staff seemed overwhelmed and not super friendly or helpful. There are elevators that feel like death traps. The certificates say they are inspected but they are slow and clunky so except taking up our bags, we only used the stairs. Those stairs though we well placed near the elevator shafts and clean. They charge $10/day to park in this random off highway location which is totally ridiculous in my opinion. It's not like it's share ride friendly from any major airport. Our room was a King Suite. The bathroom was super dated. In a room that sleeps six there were three small bath towels. And two almost empty rolls of toilet paper. The water pressure was very low though it was at least hot water. The king bedroom only had one size table and on the other side where you had no where to lay down a book or charge a phone there was a closet whose doors would not open all the way due to the bed. It was marketed as having a full kitchenette. The stove was old and rusted. Shelves were broken in the mini fridge. There was not a single dish, glass, pot or pan to be found as would be in any competitor's suite room. There are those competitors nearby so don't stay here.

I'll start with what was right: Location, we visited Solvang and Hearst Castle. So it was the perfect midpoint. What was wrong? Housekeeping, our beds were not done, and towels and complimentary coffee not replaced. When I complained at the front desk upon check out the lady said we probably had personal items on the bed, I said we didn't, she didn't say anything else and didn't seem to care. I also had asked for a quiet room and the gave me the closest room to the Freeway, again when I complained d at the front desk I was told the staff had no way of knowing the level of noise or the rooms. That's the first time I ever hear that, but I think I was purposely given that room because I asked for a quiet room, there were more than half of the rooms that did not face the freeway. I will probably never stay there again.

The good news: room was very clean and staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Bad news: spa was at about 96 degrees and couldn’t get the jets to work... the front desk staff said they would send towels for the spa but no one ever came. I ordered the tri-tip sandwich from room service (Santa Maria is known for tri-tip!) but they were out of tri tip. Had a burger instead, and it was delightfully flavorful and juicy. Would stay here again and give them another try!
