It's always a fun adventure here. We enjoyed seeing the cemetery especially this time. Roads were closed for most of the week we were there but this is always a magical place in the forest. A must see in any season, especially for those with kids.

I love finding things like this to do , although this was never really abandoned it was taken by eminent domain. The last person to live there left in 1992 when the lease ran out . The cabins are currently being restored , not for accommodations just for history. The park rangers stand out in front of the property and you can ask them anything they know most of the history of this place . There are also a few cabins that are in a less reparable state down at the main parking area . One of the locals told me he can remember back in the 70 the area also had an air strip somewhere near where the current Elkmont Campground is . Cool stuff

"Elkmont was a thriving community until the Park Service decided to destroy it."

The photo of the brown cabin by the river was our family cabin. I spent my summers there growing up and exploring the area. My great grandfather built it in 1905, and when the area became a park, the government gave lifetime leases to living relatives at that time. Now the Park Service in all its glory rather than restoring and renting them, decided to tear them all down. All that is left of our family cabin is a woven wire falling down fence and a remnant of our fireplace.

Fascinating history of Elkmont and the homes and social club located here. The park volunteer shared so much information about this area. We thoroughly enjoyed this hidden gem in the park.

Cool little area in the park where over a dozen restored cabins sit near a site where people summered at the turn of the 20th century. You can walk through the various cabins, see the layouts, and imagine what living there would have been like over 100 years ago.
